So, In a few hours we will know if England have made it through to the last 16 or not. Whether a chance for redemption awaits or the ignominy of an early plane home. Group C presented England with an extremely winnable group, by this stage we should have been saying will Germany win their group or finish second and end up playing England?. Will England meet Australia, Serbia or even Ghana?
Now that probably looks arrogant and may be it is, but England are ranked in the top ten in the world. We qualified easy from a group which included Croatia who are ranked as better than all three world cup opponents and Ukraine who are ranked higher than both Algeria and Slovenia. So what has gone wrong? I've said before that I don't think Gerrard is a good leader for England and I think we are missing Ferdinand as a leader.
My team to face Slovenia would be:
James - Made no mistakes against Algeria and as much as I would like to see Hart be England's number one, James should keep the place for now.
A.Cole - Far and away our best left back, this is not really a discussion, Stephen warnock is never going to play unless Cole is injured.
Terry - As much as I dislike him as a person he's been our best centre back and has to start.
Dawson - It will be Upson but Dawson is a considerably better player than Upson.
Johnson - Basically because we don't have another right back, hope he learns to defend so is not having to be covered by half the midfield and stikers.
J. Cole - He must have said something to Capello to not even be brought on as a sub. Would give us that creative spark we have been missing. I'm a big fan of Cole and I hope he ends up at United next season.
Barry - Our best player against Algeria.
Milner - Offers something no-one else seems to, the ability to take set pieces and Lampard has been our most wasteful player in a team who is being very wasteful. 11 shots he has had so far and only 2 of them on Target, Not good enough.
Gerrard - Playing in-front of Barry and Milner between Rooney and the midfield.
Lennon - Still better than SWP and our best option on the right, My how we miss Beckham.
Rooney - Tell him to stick up front and stop dropping deep.
What I actually think the team will be is: James, A.Cole, Terry, Upson, Johnson, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Lennon, Rooney, Heskey with possibly Defoe replacing Heskey and Rooney ending up playing far too deep again.
So very well paid England stars, you have one more chance to escape from an easy group and hopefully build on something for the second round. Alternatively you can play poorly again and have 2 weeks off on a beach somewhere.I firmly believe we will win and win well against Slovenia
Regardless of the outcome it could always be worse, at least we aren't the French team.
