I started writing this before the series ended but decided to wait till the first season had finished before posting my thoughts on the Game of Thrones TV series. It was announced yesterday that Game of Thrones had been nominated for 13 Emmy's. One of which, Peter Dinklage is a shoe in to win best supporting actor in a drama series. It will be a travesty if he doesn't win for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister.

Game of thrones has been nominated for Drama (1), Supporting Actor (2), Directing (3), Writing (4), Visual Effects (5), Stunt Coordination (6), Sound Editing (7),Costumes (8), Casting (9), Makeup (10), Prosthetic Makeup (11), Hairstyling (12), Main Title Design (13). The main titles are fantastic too so that's 2 guaranteed surely.

I loved the series and I was pleasantly surprised at how few major changes were made to the books which I have also recently read (review of those coming soon too). For the most part the changes that were made or the scenes which were added made sense in terms of setting up the story. With a 700+ page Book you can add in a lot more description where with TV you are limited what you can show.

The biggest disappointment for me was the changing of the story around the first battle where Tyrion gets knocked out before the start which in the books he does go in to battle. I understand that battle scenes are expensive but to completely miss this out and the breaking of the siege at Riverrun was a chance to really wow the audiences which was missed.

I do find it funny when some watchers threatened to never watch the last 2 episodes unless Sean Bean was brought back after being beheaded and it was an unnecessary twist. These are obviously people who have never read George RR Martin's books and the fact Ned Stark's death sets in motion most of the events for the rest of that series and the next couple of books.

I have to say that when I put together my 2011 awards this year that if anything is to beat Game of Thrones to my TV show of the year it will have to be an absolutely fantastic series. Top stuff and I am really looking forward to Series 2. I wonder if it will still be called Game of Thrones of whether series 2 will be called a Clash of Kings.
