Well this is the final part of my look back at 2011 and this one focuses on TV. I doin't want to go over the usual stuff we watch in this post such as Dr Who, Top Gear, Merlin, Masterchef, QI, etc. I want to write about a few new TV shows from 2011.
I was eagerly awaiting Terra Nova for months before it was released and although it didn't have quite the same draw I was expecting, and I haven't seen the last 2 episodes yet as they are on Sky Plus I am hoping it does get a second series. Many Sci Fi series take a second series to really kick on and find themselves and sadly too many are cancelled after one series, namely Firefly, Space above and beyond and in the last couple of years Outcasts and Defying Gravity.
Another series I was looking forward to was Alphas where a band of Humans with special abilities (a bit like Heroes) solve crimes and mysteries, usually centred around someone else with an ability. While it was enjoyable the series did seem to be overly formulaic and we sort of lost interest .
We also watched the first few episodes of Pan Am which will continue in the new year on BBC. This is a series set in the 60's about Pan American Airlines. We also watched Camelot, this was a series which had loads of promise from the first episode but then quickly went downhill. the characters were strangely written where they would make really poor choices and act against their previous character traits. I got around to watching the Spartacus series' this year as well and quite enjoyed it. Much of the enjoyment was from John Hannah's portrayal of Batiatus and he will be sadly missed in the new series. I was also saddened by the loss this year of Andy Whitfield who played the lead role. His replacement has big Sandals to fill.
By far and away the best TV show of 2011 was Game of Thrones. I have read the books and was impressed how much of the story was kept in. a few bits were added to fill in where the books wouldn't have translated into TV very well. My one gripe was the removal of the 2 battles in the first book. This does worry my slightly as much of the second book is taken up with a large battle which is key to a lot of the story in the later books. I really enjoyed the first series.
