2011 has been an interesting year for sport, I should add I will cover F1 and Football separately.
Firstly, congratulations to Mark Cavendish in being named BBC sports personality of the year. A fully deserved award. He won stages in the Tour of Oman, Giro d’italia and a mammoth 5 stages in the Tour de France, taking his total Tour de France stage wins to 20. He was the first person ever to win the final stage three years in succession. He won a stage in the tour of Britain. He became only the second Brit to become road race world champion. He also won on his return to track racing in Manchester & he was appointed an MBE. He also announced he was joining Team Sky and starting training earlier for 2012 to be more competitive. A fully deserved winner. Oh and he announced he was going to be a father.
The Olympics tickets went on sale this year and caused outrage amongst fans who had failed to get tickets (Me Included) It seems that unless you could afford to enter ballots for many tickets your chances were very slim.
Three Pakistani cricketers, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were put on trial and found guilty of spot fixing in a test match against England. All three were sentenced to prison time and given lengthy bans from Cricket. On a better note for Cricket England became the world’s best test team and the year included giving Australia an Innings drubbing on their own turf after retaining the Ashes.
The Sheffield Steelers enjoyed winning the Elite league title and then another summer of financial difficulties. They emerged with another new owner and coach, the third of each in three seasons. The Nottingham Panthers won both the challenge cup and the Playoffs. In the NHL, my team, the Vancouver Canucks lost the final in game 7 of the Stanley cup to the Boston Bruins after dominating the regular season. Sadly a plane carrying the KHL hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crashed near Yaroslavl, Russia, killing all but one passenger.
British comedian David Walliams completed a 140-mile charity swim along the River Thames, raising £1 million in aid of the BBC's Sport Relief. This is a remarkable achievement and one which I applaud. It was made even more impressive by the fact he spent a lot of the swim ill from the water he was swimming in.
London was chosen to host the 2017 World Athletics championships. This gives the Tax Payer more value for money from the Olympic stadium and another sporting spectacle for the British public to not be able to get tickets for.
Novak Djokovic had a fantastic year winning 3 majors and claimed the number 1 rank.
Luke Donald claimed the world number 1 ranking and completed an unprecedented double by winning orders of merit on both sides of the Atlantic. Rory Mcilroy became the youngest US Open champion for 81 years.
So that covers much of the year, I am sure I have missed a lot so why not share your memorable moments from the world of sport in 2011. A review of Football and F1 to follow.
