Facebook, Skype & Microsoft Versus Google

Well the big awesome announcement from Facebook was erm a little less than awesome. What it does mean is that now if you have a Skype account you should be able to use 1 on 1 video chat. While this is bettered by Google+ allowing lots of people to video chat, it is a nice addition to Facebook. Facebook's biggest strength is its position and user base. Something Google currently massively lags behind on for two big reasons. One they're offering is new and not fully adopted which is in part due to the second reason, Its still a closed beta effectively.

It's another step to joining with Microsoft to fight Google as Microsoft now owns Skype subject to dotting the i's and crossing the t's. There are more areas where together Microsoft and Skype are likely to be joining with Facebook and from a business sense it does make perfect sense giving them both a joint platform to compete with Google. Some of those features are rumoured to be Xbox/Windows Live, Office, Bing and Windows Phone. It will certainly be very interesting to see how this all shapes up and I also wouldn't be surprised for Microsoft to take an even larger stake in Facebook.

I did wonder whether the Skype & Facebook tie-up would have been launched later with more features but personally I think it shows Facebook were flustered by Google+ and wanted to get the feature out there as quickly as possible.

Google+ seem to be working on lots of different things too and quite frankly as a bit of a social media nerd I can't wait to see what both sides of the great social media war of 2011/12 will come up with.
