Premier League Play Offs

To be honest I skimmed over most of what has been said about the proposed play off for the last Champions League slot because there are lots of ideas like this which get mooted or mentioned in the press, the 39th Game for example, which come to nothing.

It is certainly an idea which will keep more teams involved in the final few weeks of the season but where exactly do these games fit in? in the weeks after the season there is the FA Cup and then the Champions league final. To really be viable there needs to be a reduction in league games somewhere and this is where the top 4 have missed a trick I think.

Unsurprisingly the top 4 all voted against it, however it only needs 14 of the 20 teams to vote in favour to get it through. If I were the top 4 I'd say great lets have the play-off but as a trade off we want the league reducing to 18 teams to account for fitting the games in.

It is quite feasible that those involved in the play offs might be still fighting in the league to the last weekend and may still be in Europe or the FA cup. By reducing the league i wonder how many teams towards the bottom would then vote in favour of the idea.

If they are going to bring this in then there needs to be a restructure of the way the top flight works in this country, the often mentioned Premier League 2 might be a possibility.

I was quite surprised to hear Liverpool were not in favour as they are going to struggle to make 4th this season and probably over the next few years and this play off might benefit them more than most teams.

I shall watch this debate with interest to see how it pans out.
