Today was the draw for the Champions League and Europa League. As a United fan I have no complaints for us being out of the Champions League. We were simply not good enough through the group and were far too lax in defence and attack.  I also don’t agree with teams being put in the Europa League after losing in the Champions League as I don’t see why teams, who fail, and United and City have failed, should be given a second chance. That said as we are in it and I Hope we go all out to win the trophy. I am fed up of teams demeaning the competition by playing second string teams.

I don’t expect United or City to play the first eleven every round though which is a shame. But good luck to all the English teams still in Europe.

Champions League draw – Last 16

  • NAPOLI V CHELSEA – A very tough draw for Chelsea and they will need to defend really well to combat Napoli’s counter attack.
  • AC MILAN V ARSENAL – On Paper the tougher tie of the 2 English clubs still in the Champions League. AC Milan have lost the last 3 years against English opposition so will want to prove a point. Looks like a cracking tie.
On balance both English clubs have tough draws and both tie’s could go either way.

Europa League draw - Last 32

  • PORTO v MANCHESTER CITY – A great tie and a tough one for City. After failing at the first real hurdle in their first foray into the Champions league I am sure they will want to prove a point.
  • STOKE CITY v VALENCIA – Rounding out a fifth tough draw for the English teams however I can’t see Valencia looking forward to visiting the Britannia stadium.
  • AJAX v MANCHESTER UNITED – Ajax are not the European powerhouse they once were however this is a tough tie for United. I’m sire Sir Alex won’t be taking them lightly and I hope we pick a strong eleven.

Europa League draw - Last 16

  • STOKE CITY/VALENCIA v TRABZONSPOR/PSV EINDHOVEN
  • LEGIA WARSAW /SPORTING LISBON v PORTO/MANCHESTER CITY
  • AJAX/MANCHESTER UNITED v LOKOMOTIV MOSCOW/ATHLETIC BILBAO
There isn’t a lot I can say about the last 16 as I don’t know the actual ties but of Bilbao and Moscow I’d rather United be going to Spain if they get past Ajax. I’m sure City would prefer Lisbon to Warsaw and Stoke would prefer PSV simply for travelling times.

I like the idea of knowing potential last 16 opponents too but I do wonder why if the draws are un-seeded from here on in that the competitions don’t move to a tree format where you know the route to the final. This would save lots of money and airline miles for club officials needing to travel to UEFA.

The format would be simple; Draw the round of 32 in Europa league and Champions league last 16 as they do now. Then draw which position on the tree each match is placed This gives the full potential route to the final for all teams and saves quite a wedge of cash.

So there you are, Check back later for my Predictions for this weekend.
