Well another year of football is almost over with just 2 rounds of fixtures let of 2011. It looks very much like Manchester City will begin 2012 sitting pretty at the top of the table. It will be interesting to see if they can hold on to the position when the pressure builds later in the season.
Richard Keys and Andy Grey were fired for making sexist comments towards lines-women Sian Massey. Gary Neville has taken over some of their role and is doing an excellent job, even garnering praise from Liverpool fans.
Racism was on the Agenda towards the back end of 2011 with Luis Suarez being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra. Liverpool made an insane classless statement and all wore nice little Suarez T-Shirts which I am sure you can buy in the gift shop. How a club of Liverpool's stature can show a complete lack of class is beyond me. John Terry has also been charged by the CPS and will appear in court in February. If he is guilty then I hope the FA ban him from ever playing for England again but until he is or is not found guilty he is innocent as far as i am concerned.
There was a FIFA presidential election this year where Sepp Blatter eventually stood unopposed after his original opponent Bin Hammam had to pull out due to ongoing corruption allegations of which he was eventually found guilty. In my opinion, and it is just my opinion, it is crazy Blatter hasn't been forced to step down. It's ludicrous to suggest he wasn't aware of the corruption which was rife and therefore is as guilty as those taking the bribes. Following this he claimed Racism could be solved by the players shaking hands after the match, what a nutter.
Manchester City win the FA cup their first trophy for 35 years on the Same day United claimed their record breaking 19th Premier league crown. Newcastle re-branded St Jame's park to be the Sports Direct Arena in another move from Mike Ashley which has turned the fans even more against him. Gary Speed was found dead in his home after appearing on Football Focus only erlier that day. This is a tragedy that this happened and we may never know the reason it did.
Major Transfers There was a number of big transfers in the last 12 months Fernando Torres moved from Liverpool to Chelsea for £50 Million. Liverpool spent £35 million on Andy Carroll and 22.7 Million on Luis Suarez. Manchester City spent £35 Million on Sergio Aguero who, along side Luis Suarez have looked the only real value in the £20 Million plus transfers bracket after both Torres and Carroll have struggled. Manchester United signed Ashley Young, David De Gea and Phil Jones in a big money summer. Newcastle signed Demba Ba on a free transfer but the best signing of the year was Scott Parker to Spurs for £5.5 million.
Player of the Year There have been a number of great performers this year including Nani who has developed into a world class player. Silva who has Improved City more than any other player. Demba Ba who has scored 22 goals in 29 games playing for a relegated West ham team and Newcastle United. Luis Suarez who is easily Liverpool's best player and has had a great year apart from the Racism issue. But by far and away the best player of 2011 was Robin Van Persie. It's a shame a bunch of Sad Liverpool fans forced the issue of Luis Suarez on the Sky Sports poll as a protest over him being rightly banned. Robin Van Persie is much more deserving and has had a truly stellar year.
I'm sure I have missed a few things, what do you remember most about Football in 2011.
